  Captain Hugh Spenser Mathews was the son of George Spencer Mathews BA MA (a Land and Estate Agent and founder member of The Alpine Club) and Annette Mary Mathews, of 32, Augustus Rd., Edgbaston, Birmingham. (Principally cited from CWGC data).
  
  Lieutenant H. S. Mathews is briefly referred to in the London Gazette of 23 February 1915 as being an officer of Temporary seniority in the 14th (1st Birmingham) Royal Warwickshires on 3rd December 1914.
  
  This was a Birmingham Pals battalion. There is a good website on the Birmingham pals at www.birminghampals.co.uk/the-battalions/the-somme/ which mentions Captain H. S. Mathews as 'a member of a well-known Birmingham family'. The 14th Battalion was committed to this attack as part of 13th Brigade. The attack threw away the lives of the brave men of this battalion against uncut wire across 300 yards of enfiladed no-mans land.//

  Captain Mathews was born in 1884 in Edgbaston. Birth index and census returns show his name as Hugh Spencer Mathews. He was also a Surveyor and Land Agent. In 1911 he was living at 32 Augustus Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham with his widowed mother, younger brother and five servants. The family occupied sixteen rooms.
  
  National Probate Calendar shows that Captain Mathews address at the time of his death was 12 Waterloo Street, Birmingham. Probate was granted to George Vyvyan Mathews.
