    The Lunar Module is in the background; the item in front is the unmanned Surveyor 3 probe, which preceded the Apollo 12 mission by some 2 years. It was set down as a mission goal to make a precision landing near Surveyor, testing the ability to land at definite points on the Moon. (Apollo 11 did not do this; Neil Armstrong, on seeing that the planned landing site was full of boulders, took manual control and ran the Eagle Landing Module some distance away to find a safe touchdown site.)
