Herbert John Snelling Ashdown born in the first quarter of 1880 Tendring, Essex. The fourth child and oldest son of Joseph Ashdown [b.1847 Surrey] and Betsey Ashdown nee Snelling [b.1849 Norfolk]. The 1881 census records him living at Mistley Green, Essex, with his parents and three older sisters; Alice [b.1872], Ethel [b.1873] and Jessie [b.1876]. His father’s occupation is recorded as Accountant. The 1891 census records him living at New Road, Mistley Green, Essex, with his parents, the two younger of his sisters and five younger brothers; Hector [b.1882], Arthur [b.1884], Sidney [b.1886], Francis [b.1888] and Clifford [b.1890]. He marries to Minnie Louise Witherden on 26th December at St Mathew’s Church, Brixton, London. The marriage register records that, at the time, he was a sergeant in the Leinster Regiment and that at the time of his marriage, he was resident at Selbourn Road, Denmark Hill [property now demolished], and that his wife, had recently lived at South Circular Road, Dublin. I wonder if the fact that he does not appear in the 1901 census means that he was serving with the army and in Ireland – where he met his future wife. Not found in the 1911 census. London Gazette entries read as follows; August 1915 – The Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians); 2nd Lieut. H J S Ashdown to be Lieut. with effect 16th May 1915. April 1916 – Lieut Herbert J S Ashdown [The Prince of Wales’s Leinster Regt. (Royal Canadians)] to be temp. Captain and Adjutant from 13th March 1916. May 1916 – The promotion to the rank of Lieut. from 2nd Lieut. is antedated from 5th May 1915 H J S Ashdown Leinster Regt. March 1917 – The undermentioned Lieut. to be Captains with effect 1st January 1917........ H J S Ashdown. July 1917 – The undermentioned Captains to be Captains and appointed Adjutants with effect 13th April 1917........ H J S Ashdown (Leinster Regt.). December 1918 – Labour Corps; Capt. H J S Ashdown (Leins. R.) relinquishes the appointment of Adjutant on ceasing to be employed with the Corps from 19th September 1918. January 1919 – Capt. H J S Ashdown [Leins. Rgt. To be Garrison Adjutant. April 1922 – Appointments made to the War Office; Staff Capt. H J S Ashdown (Leinster Regt.). June 1922 - War Office Special Appointments; ........ relinquish their temporary appointments; Staff Capt. H J S Ashdown, Leinster Regt. April 1924 – as of 23rd April 1924, Capt. H J S Ashdown (half pay list) late of the Leinster Regt. Retires on retirement pay on account of ill health caused by wounds received on active service. His medal record card shows that he served in France in 1914 and that in July 1920 his Battalion Commander applied on his behalf for the 14-15 star but that the medal was returned at in August of that year. From the 1930’s until his death he lived with his wife at their home at 10 Langham Gardens, Wembley, London. Died September 1954 Willesden, London [actually Wembley].
