This is the basing concept for the Douglas SM-75 "Thor" IRBM. The prototype of this facility was built as a non-launching example, on the company's Sunnyvale, Calif. factory grounds. Operational facilities of this type were later constructed at Vandenberg AFB and in England. At least two were built on Pacific atolls (Johnston Island, for one) for use in nuclear testing. The British crews who operated the Thor for the RAF, trained at Vandenberg, on the site, there.
