John Lockwood Kipling, clay bas-relief illustrating a scene from "Mowgli's Brothers". To prevent Shere Khan the tiger from persuading the wolf-pack to depose their leader Akela, Mowgli steals a fire-pot from a human village and uses it to scare off the tiger and his allies.

Terracotta bas-relief by John Lockwood Kipling illustrating the story "Red Dog". There's a bigger, greyscaled and contrast-adjusted version here. When Mowgli's wolf pack is threatened by dhole (the red dogs of the title) he tricks the dhole-pack into chasing him off the edge of a river gorge lined with beehives. Mowgli has smeared his body with garlic so the bees will not attack him, but the dhole are not so lucky. Those that survive face drowning in the fast-flowing river or being killed by Mowgli. This thins the dhole's numbers just enough to be decisive in their final battle against Mowgli and the wolves.
