Taronga Park Zoo

I think that the present Giraffe enclosure is still in the same position. I'll have to check next time I go. Meanwhile, here's some present day views from around the same place at Tooronga Zoo: www.flickr.com/photos/sydneydawg2006/554583664/in/photost... www.flickr.com/photos/sydneydawg2006/554889743/in/photost...

My first impression is that it is quite old (1920s), because it looks like coal-fired ship. But I think all the apartments at Cremorne Point and Kirribilli suggest later (1930's or 1940's). That is quite a large ship there and should be able to be identified.
  • Mich said:
That ship is either HMAS Australia or HMAS Canberra, which were two "County Class Heavy Cruisers" of the RAN. Or possible a visiting British ship of the same class. The three funnels with the fatter middle funnel and the sloping retro-looking masts are quite distinctive. HMAS Australia was in service from 1928 to 1954. HMAS Canberra was in service from 1928 and was sunk in 1942 near Guadalcanal. Doesn't really narrow down the date all that much.

Good points mich_sydney_2007. Although it doesn't help there was also County Class HMAS Shropshire in RAN service from 1943 to 1954.
