Vice-Admiral Sidney Robert Drury-Lowe, C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (19 October, 1871 – 24 January, 1945) was an officer in the Royal Navy. Contents 1 Life & Career 2 Post-War 3 Footnotes 4 Bibliography 5 Service Records Life & Career He was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant dated 14 May, 1891. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 14 May, 1892.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 31 December, 1902.[2] "Commander Sidney R. Drury-Lowe, as second-in-command of the barracks, has failed in the performance of his duties as executive officer, and will be superseded."[3] He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1909.[4] In July 1912, Drury-Lowe was appointed in command of the light cruiser Chatham.[5] He was appointed in command of the pre-dreadnought Zealandia on 14 September, 1916.[6] He was appointed in temporary command of Princess Royal on 9 October, 1917,[7] handing command back over to Captain John D. Jelly less than 3 months later. He was appointed in command of the dreadnought Superb on 2 February, 1918.[8] Post-War Drury-Lowe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 19 February, 1920, vice Caulfeild.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the retired List on the Retired List on 12 August, 1925.[10] Drury-Lowe died at St. Annes-on-Sea of heart failure on 24 January, 1945 aged seventy-three. He left a widow, Clare, of 103 Hamilton Terrace, London, N.W.8.   HMS Chatham and Captain Sidney R Drury-Lowe. "After the the whereabouts of the Koenigsberg was indicated by the attack on the Pegasus on September 19th, a concentration of fast cruisers was arranged by the Admiralty in East African waters, and a thorough and prolonged search by vessels in combination was made. This search resulted, on October 30th, in the Koenigsberg being discovered by HMS Chatham (Captain Sidney R Drury-Lowe) hiding in shoal water about six miles up the Rufigi River, opposite Mafia Island. Owing to her greater draught the Chatham could not reach the Koenigsberg which is probably aground except at high water. Part of the crew of the Koenigsberg is landed and entrenched on the banks of the river. Both the entrenchments and the Koenigsberg have been bombarded by the Chatham, but owing to the dense palm groves amid which the ship lies, it is not possible to estimate the damage. Pending operations for her capture or destruction, effective steps have been taken to block the Koenigsberg in by sinking colliers in the only navigable channel, and she is now imprisoned and unable to do any further harm.
