The caption here with this photo is incorrect, this is not a "Ryan monoplane," but the ill-fated Tremaine Humming Bird, built for the deadly Dole Air Race prize flight from Oakland, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. While the Mahoney-Ryan X-1 (X7621) Special "Sportster" was a monoplane, it differed considerably from the aircraft photographed above in that it had tandem cockpit bays (as opposed to the cabin above) and much more robust landing gear. Here is a photo of the Mahoney-Ryan X-1 in the SDASM photostream:
