The white-jacketed man at the left will be Albert Namalambe, the first convert at Livingstonia, christened in 1881. He moved with the mission to Bandawe the same year, but in 1885 was sent back to Cape Maclear as teacher. By 1894, with nine other teachers, he was running two schools there and three others at nearby villages. In 1896 he moved to the Dutch Reformed Church Mission at Malembo where he worked until his death in 1908. He had been appointed Headman by the administration and "Official comment on his death was that there was 'no one in this part of the district with any real influence to take his place'". Source: P.A. Cole-King, "Cape Maclear", Malawi Dept. of Antiquities, Publication No. 4, 1968, which includes a portrait photo of Namalambe.
