    This was likely to be custom-built track because WMATA cars apparently use 4 foot 8¼ inch gauge, a quarter inch narrower than U.S. standard. Also note this is temporary or test track. The third rail shroud is wood. Note the transit couplers.

    In these days, light metering was more challenging than when you shoot with your phone. Some flash/strobe units had a photocell that varied output but you had to enable it. You didn't know for certain the photo was usable until it came out of the darkroom process. This could be a while after you shot it. There's a lot of shiny aluminum in the frame here. I often got exposures wrong in the film days due to lack of skill. An acquaintance who shoots annual report photos is a consumate pro and seldom makes mistakes.
