This is corroborated by information below. A detachment by VQ-2 with EA-3B (Modex unknown) tail code JQ were also on temporary assignment to CVW-1 from their base at Rota in Spain. This is corroborated by information further below. In August 1980 we flew her along with 146453 around the world to catch up with our ship in the Indian Ocean. We took off from Rota, flew to Azores, Nova Scotia, Wash DC, Ellsworth SD, Alameda, Hawaii, Wake IS, Guam, PI, Diego Garcia, USS Eisenhower (our ship), Djibouti, Athens and finally back to Rota. Whew what a trip. We flew like 26,000 miles to catch up to our ship and return, could be a record for a carrier based A/C. Fond memories of this A/C and that around the world flight. "Dawn Launch" - 'Ranger 17', EA-3B (146455), from VQ-2 on the starboard bow cat of the Coral Sea (CV-43). Mission: Electronic Warfare, locate and identify hostile Libyan Naval Combatant ships. Use AN/ALR-40 ESM and COMINT systems. Mission was successful with the destruction of a Libyan ship by an A-6 bomber. Note the action: Cat crew departing from bridle hookup, Troubleshooter checking bleed ports at both engines as they are brought up to full power and the button man in the catwalk at the ready. It looks like a 'thumbs up launch'. As far as I know only two P-3B were converted to EP-3J and that was 152719 and 152745. This is one of three P-3A modified as EP-3B in 'mid 1960's' It was later redesignated as an UP-3A and went to AMARC in 1992. Stig

The first of the "two-door" EP-3 'Batrack' Orions. NARF Alameda installed a second, "mirror" door alongside the original, doubling the opening in the fuselage side, but they failed to install additional fuselage bracing. On takeoff following conversion, torque down the length of the fuselage nearly twisted the tail off. The door opening was strengthened and '673' went back into service, but a 4 degree twist in the tail remained until she was scrapped at AMARG in 2017.

"On 01/25/1987 EA-3B was attempting to land on the USS Nimitz CVN-68 at night during blue water operations off of Lebanon. Aircraft attempted to catch the arresting gear wire 5 times to no avail. During one of the bolters the EA-3B drop out of view below the flight deck almost impacting the water. After regaining altitude the aircraft was running low on fuel with less than 800lbs left, the aircraft then meet up with the A-7 tanker which would not work because the buddy store was spewing fuel every where (No Joy). Due to the low fuel state the EA-3B was unable to make it to a shore base and it was decided to launch the KA-6B tanker. It was then determined that the A-6 couldn't be launched due to it was blocked in on the bow by other aircraft from the last recovery. After a discussion between the aircraft, CAG and VQ-2 CO, It was ruled out for the crew to bail out or ditch into the cold Mediterranean water. The barricade was rigged, then it was discovered that a big wrench used to tighten up the barricade was missing, so the barricade was sagging 8 foot. The EA-3B made a really nice approach to the carrier descending toward the barricade at a high angle, once near the barricade the LSO told the pilot to "Cut, Cut" meaning kill the engines, the pilot failed to do so flying into the barricade really high hitting the nose landing gear on the sagging barricade ripping it back and slamming the A-3 into the deck then skidding down the flight deck and off the angle into the sea. The rescue Helo hovered above the A-3 not noting any movement inside; the helo SAR swimmers did not enter the A-3. After 13 minutes of floating the EA-3B sank with its 7 men crew to the bottom of the sea. "" Another EA-3B (146448) was painted as '12' and set up as an open air memorial to the crew of 144850. After another carrier landing incident, the last ship detachment that EA-3B's of VQ-2 ever did was on Sept 12th 1987 aboard CV-60 USS SARATOGA.
