The prototype Travel Air 5000, nicknamed "City of Oakland," taxiing prior to departure for Hawaii on 14 July 1927. The ship was so heavy with fuel that bystanders were called on to push it from its parking spot, so it could begin its takeoff roll.

The prototype Travel Air 5000 "City of Oakland" came to rest on the island of Molokai after running out of gas. The aircraft was a write-off, but Smith and Bronte walked away from the crash-landing to become the first civilians to successfully fly the Pacific from the mainland to Hawaii. Their flight pre-dated the Dole race by over a month.

It's been identified on the Wings of Peace Yahoo group as the Travelair 5000 City of Oakland which made the crossing to Hawaii just before the official Dole race crash landing in a tree.

SDASM Archives This is indeed a photo of "City of Oakland." Note the same balanced rudder on "City of Oakland" as it is filmed taking off in the newsreel below at the 5-min 30-sec mark: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B9T9MCq_h8 Also, here's another photo of the aircraft in the photostream:
