I wonder what type of anaesthesia was used? the patient has his eyes open. Perhaps chloroform?

This is a strange picture. One wonders about the occasion. One of the soldiers is lying on a reclining chair as you might find it on someone's porch, the other on a wooden chair. Both pieces of furniture don't look like typical trench equipment, just as there were probably rarely two female nurses to a patient anywhere in the trenches.

xiphophilos I happen to be 99% sure where this photo is located and the context. It is about a German training camp in the Vosges around the castle of Konigsbourg. This is one of the most beautiful photo series of the war. Yours is a copy of one of those photos. Surely made by Germans who wanted the same but which was not near the place of sale.
