    The bronze equestrian statue in the foreground honors George B. (Brinton) McClellan (1826-1885) who was a controversial major general during the American Civil War. He organized the famous Army of the Potomac, and led the Union Army during the Battle of Antietam – the single bloodiest day in American military history, with some 23,000 casualties.   He married Ellen Mary Marcy in 1860. Known as "Little Mac", he was elected Governor of New Jersey in 1878. –excerpted Wikipedia The site of this statue marks the beginning of Kalorama Triangle – a residential enclave in Northwest Washington bounded by three major thoroughfares: Connecticut Avenue, Calvert Street and Columbia Road. The Kalorama Triangle Historic District includes 353 historic buildings. (The Churchill originally opened as a luxury apartment building in 1906, and was later converted to a hotel.) The statue was erected in 1907, and is currently (April, 2009) being restored.
