Nakajima Ki-44-II-Otsu Shoki ("Tojo")

The aircraft at the top-right is not a Zero but a Nakajima Ki-44-II-Otsu Shoki ("Tojo"). This particular machine, serial number 1435 was flown by Capt. Jun Shimizu, who was the 1st Chutai Leader of the 47th Sentai, based at Narimasu, Japan, in 1944. Note the 40mm cannon in the wing. It was a supporting aircraft for the Shinten Seikutai ramming attacks on B-29s.

The floatplane to the left is a Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu (Rex) and no doubt one of those ca four-five captured and taken to the USA. Unfortunately the US records are rather bad regarding these aircraft and their transfer around to various places. Stig
