Wow, it's scary to think of flying in one of those things! And it's amazing how much progress aviation made in just a few years if you compare these to the planes that were flying at the end of the war!

These were news photographs, printed in newspapers and such. The retouching added contrast to the flag, making it stand out more.

De mouwen van de soldaten zijn ook geretoucheerd. Dat kan betekenen dat er distinctieven op genaaid waren die het legercorps konden identificeren bij publicaite. Het Duitse rijk had een uitgebreide censuur, die ervoor zorgde dat geen informatie over posities van legers verspreid kon worden. Legerpost ging via een centrale in Berlijn, waar zelfs plaatsnamen op ansichtkaarten met blauwe merkstift afgedekt werden.

Brieven van/aan soldaten werden allemaal gelezen en gecensureerd. Post werd geadresseerd op legereenheid. Mogelijk is dat ook de reden dat er veel foto's door soldaten zelf in de loopgraven gemaakt en daar ook afgedrukt werden en dat er daarom veel meer gruwelfoto's van Duitse kant uit WO 1 over zijn dan van geallieerde kant.
