The Aboriginal community of Hope Vale on Cape York Peninsula was established as the Cape Bedford Mission by the Johann Flierl, a missionary of the Lutheran Church in 1886, with the settlement at Elim on the beach. Due to worries that the Aboriginal people might cooperate with the advancing Japanese in World War II, the total population was evacuated south to various communities by the military. The German Lutheran missionaries were sent to internment camps. Most of the people were sent to Woorabinda, near Rockhampton, in Queensland. In just one month, 28 people lost their lives, with nearly a quarter of the people dying over the next 8 years. Hope Vale was re-established as a Lutheran Mission in September 1949. Aboriginal people from the Hope Valley and Cape Bedford Missions settled there. A work crew was allowed to return in 1949 and the first families came home in 1950. Hopevale is no longer run as a mission by the church, but by its own elected Community Council. In 1986 it received a "Deed of Grant in Trust" (or "DOGIT") which "granted title to 110 000 ha of land which was previously Aboriginal Reserve Land held by the Under Secretary as trustee, to the Community Council to act as trustees of the land for the benefit of the residents." Eildon Hill Reserve is located in Windsor, an inner northern suburb approximately 3.5km from Brisbane’s central business district. More specifically, the reserve is accessed through Constitution Road, one of the many fairly steep and winding residential streets that make up the suburb of Windsor – Eildon Hill Reserve is literally the centre point of a string of houses, the majority of which are old Queenslanders. Sitting in about 10 acres of land on the corner of Brook Street and Constitution Road was this landmark house. In June 1896 the house was sold to Victor Ratcliffe Edward Drury who took out a £1,500 mortgage. The Drurys were living nearby at Rockton. Drury was a solicitor and in 1892 he became a partner in the firm of Hart and Flower. Drury retired in 1899. At this time the house was named Drustan - a combination of the Drury and Stanley family names. In November 1900 the title was transferred to Barbara Jane Drury (nee Grahame) who mortgaged it for £5,000. Barbara, Victor’s aunt, was the widow of Edward Robert Drury who was the big boss at the Queensland National Bank. That Drury family had eight children - four boys and four girls. It was now that the house was called Rougham after the Drury family estate in Bury St Edmonds, England. At Rougham, the family kept horses, cows, poultry and angora goats. In June 1937, the house was offered for sale for removal and the following June the unsold allotments and the house site were re-subdivided into ten lots. These were sold as the Windsor Heights Estate. The corner block on Constitution Road sold for £280 whilst a large block with a small street frontage at the end of Rougham Street sold for £37. Hayman Island is the most northerly of the Whitsunday Islands, off the coast of Central Queensland, Australia.[1][2] It is a private island open to the public, most famous for its luxury resort which was built in the 1950s by Ansett Transport Industries. The island is a significant drawing point for tourism in Queensland. The island is small at just an area of 294 hectares (726 acres). In 1947, Ansett Transport Industries acquired the island.[7] Work began on the Royal Hayman Hotel, which was opened in 1950 by Australian Deputy Prime Minister, Arthur Fadden in anticipation of a royal visit to Australia, for which Hayman was granted a Royal Charter. Arrival on Hayman was by Catalina and Sandringham flying boat. In July 1985, a two-year, $300 million project commenced transforming the island into a luxury resort.[8] The works were carried out by Thiess Contractors[9] and in 1987 Hayman was invited to join The Leading Hotels of the World. In May 1998, Hayman Island was sold to the BT Hotel Group.[7] The resort undertook another significant renovation in 2001 and received many of its modern five-star luxury amenities.
